Santa is causing Traffic!!…Out in Hackensack…A Zebra at the Mall??…details in the latest DMM e-news

Luxury Retailing (not just a house) is What You'll Get in Hackensack

Billy Joel crooned about “a house out in Hackensack, is that all you get for your money” in his famous tune, “Movin' Out.” Simon Property Group thinks a house is not all your money gets out in Hackensack and the company is putting its money into “a multimillion-dollar makeover” for its Shops at Riverside mall in northern New Jersey, according to a recent article in The Record. David Contis, president of Simon's mall division, told reporter Joan Verdon that there is an opportunity “to reinvent 110,000 square feet of shopping center space” and that doesn't happen often. Contis believes “Riverside has an edge in the competition for luxury shoppers because it can offer a more intimate 'boutique' experience” than other nearby malls.

It Turns Out Shopping-Center Santas Bring People and Money to the Mall

If you were debating whether or not to have a Santa in your mall this year, from an economic standpoint, it seems to make to sense (and dollars) to have him and his elves camping out for a few weeks. Jesse Tron of the ICSC told Adweek magazine recently that Santas indeed drive traffic to the mall, and a recent ICSC study concluded that “50 percent of parents with kids aged 13 or younger plan to make a trip to a shopping center for the express purpose of visiting Santa Claus.” Let's see web retailers do that! Bob Elkin, president and CEO of the International Brotherhood of Real Bearded Santas (yes, that's a thing, and kids, don't click that or Google it) echoes the sentiment, telling Adweek that “parents with small children will go so far as to comparison shop for Santas, choosing the mall or retail store with the most realistic Santa, and going there.”

That Zebra Walking around the Mall? It's Just NBA Superstar Steph Curry

It's not enough that he's one of the best players to ever hit the hardwood, that he guided the Golden State Warriors to the championship last season, and his daughter Riley holds the best post-game press conferences ever, but does Stephen Curry have to create scenes at the local mall too? A number of NBA-focused blogs recently posted photos and videos of the league's reigning MVP walking around the Sunvalley Shopping Center in Concord, California, wearing a zebra mask. Your humble newsletter editor wonders whether he was making some sort of animal-rights statement or if he feels he doesn't get enough attention, but concludes it is nice to see big-time, pampered pro athletes willing to have some fun.
