Is NYC A Microcosm for the Entire U.S. Retail Landscape?



The Urban Land Institute
, a group dedicated to connecting the global real estate community, held its Fall Meeting in New York City last month. One of the panel discussions was called “Shopping Laboratory: New York City as a Global Center of Retail and Other Global Retail Trends.” Faith Hope Consolo of real estate company Douglas Elliman Retail, according to a report in Real Estate Weekly, noted that, in discussing a recent burst of activity in Manhattan's retail sector, “This has been the year of the department store.” In response to growing online threats to brick-and-mortar locations, panelists felt retailers could do more to remain relevant and thrive.

Miami Loses Lebron, but Gains Luxury Retail



The NBA season is underway
, and Cleveland now has its favorite son back on the Cavaliers, having lured him home from the Miami Heat over the summer. Don't expect Miami to cool off, however, as retailers are priming the area as a luxury shopping destination. According to the Wall Street Journal, luxury brands that typically eschew the mall scene are more enticed by what is known as “high street” retail. “Open-air luxury-retail projects are popping up in other cities as well,” the article notes, including Atlanta and Houston.

The Grand-Opening Giveaway – Think it Through First


Sometimes it's not enough
to be opening a new store or mall with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and various civic leaders in attendance to smile and wave. Giveaways have become all the rage over the years in order to attract larger crowds, attention and dollars. Sometimes that can have unintended consequences, so it's important to think the promotion through before actually forging ahead. Case in point, a mall in Iceland decided to give away candy to the first folks to show up to their grand opening. That is bound to a) create havoc and b) result in some disappointed and crying children. It happened in Finland; it can happen anywhere.
