Carli Whitwell grew up in the 1990s and, like many of us, she hung out at her local mall with her friends. Over the years, that routine changed. Now it’s making a comeback for her and many others. Writing for Refinery29.com, a news website devoted to women’s issues, Ms. Whitwell writes that post-COVID, the malls (aka “multi-brand spaces”) are on the rise again. “Rihanna just opened her first Savage X Fenty retailer in a Vegas mall. Meanwhile, Amazon, the online behemoth, is opening Amazon Style at The Americana at Brand Mall in L.A., banking on boosted and, frankly, bored consumers ready to spend,” she notes. “We’re all yearning for a simpler time when the biggest decision facing us on a Saturday afternoon was: ‘Should I get this crewneck in blue or purple’ instead of: ‘Should I get the Pfizer or Moderna booster?'” she added.

JC PenneyJCP Looks to 2022 to Emerge as Retail Powerhouse

In a challenging retail climate, for a brand that has multiple iterations (J.C. Penney, JCPenney, JCP) some re-invention is bound to be necessary, and indeed, welcome. The company is looking to become a new retail powerhouse in 2022, following 2020’s bankruptcy filings. Rumors are swirling that the company is looking to add Kohl’s into their mix, and a new marketing campaign was launched to announce, “Shopping is Back!” In a recent RetailDive.com report, Erin Schmidt, senior analyst at Coresight Research, said, “JCPenney has been strategic in reestablishing its brand portfolio over the past year, with an emphasis on diversity and inclusive-sizing for the entire family. We believe this will be a differentiator for the retailer as these are underpenetrated categories in the market.”
