Short Attention Spans Nudge Retail Toward Pop-Ups

Anyway, our attention spans are shorter (thank you television, video games and smart phones). The same goes for our shopping habits. We don’t necessarily want the same store year after year at the same mall. “Pop-up shops have been growing in recent years, with many brands opening short-term retail locations in cities around the world. Bringing the pop-up concept to the shopping mall makes the idea more mainstream and expands it to multiple brands,” noted Blake Morgan, Forbes Contributor and the host of “The Modern Customer” podcast.
Top Ten (Plus One!) Predictions for Grocery Retail
A new report says shopping centers are eager to partner with supermarkets. Real Estate giant CBRE published the report in its “Food in Demand” series. The report is for registered users only, but they shared their Top Eleven predictions for the near future of grocery retail with Chain Store Age. Among their predictions:
- Grocery growth will be strongest across non-traditional and specialty formats
- Expect significant reinvestment in existing store portfolios to drive competitive advantage
- Within the next decade, the check-out line will disappear
“Grocery operators must diversify their offering tobest compete,” said Melina Cordero, global head of retail research for CBRE.
Retailer Can Win Free Rent for a Year in “Shark Tank”-like Contest
A Lake Saint Louis shopping center is thinking out-of-the-box to lure a new retailer into its fold. The Meadows at Lake Saint Louis has teamed up with RetailNext, which provides e-commerce-style shopper analytics to brick-and-mortar retailers, to create a Shark Tank-esque contest. The prize? According to their website, “The Next Big Thing in Retail” winner could get “free rent up to one year along with the support of several high-profile judges & mentors, mall management and retail marketing experts.” HFN Digital reports the entry deadline is August 16, finalists will make presentations in early September, and the winner will be announced shortly thereafter. A grand opening could happen prior to Black Friday, or in the spring of 2020.
