Say Location Analytics 3x Fast…Server Farms the Latest to Secure Mall Real Estate…What They Think in the Retail Design Industry..details in the latest dmm e-news

Location Analytics, Location Analytics, Location Analytics

We all remember the old adage
“location, location, location.” While that is still important in the 21st century, to that crumb of intelligence we need to add the phrase, “location analytics, location analytics, location analytics.” One of the many benefits of the digital world is the sheer volume of data that there is available. According to a recent blog post by Simon Thompson, global marketing strategist for geographic information systems (GIS) software developer ESRI (a DMM partner), says location analytics tell him that it's “no longer a negative for 95% of your customers to live more than ten miles away from your stores. If you can connect with them, they will buy.”

Server Farms the Latest to Secure Mall Real Estate

With a touch of retail irony
, empty mall shops across the country are being converted to “server farms.” That's according to a recent article by The Wall Street Journal, which noted that empty department stores are being looked at and gobbled up by data centers that need more server space to be able to handle the growing needs of the internet beast. That means the very same websites that take business from shopping malls – and also help guide people to them – and feed us steady streams of cute cat videos and multi-player gaming, may be located in the malls themselves. In the article, writers Drew Fitzgerald and Paul Ziobro note that “the most attractive real-estate prices are often in middle-class neighborhoods where many consumers have turned to online shopping.”

What They Think in the Retail Design Industry

A recent issue of design:retail
magazine spoke to retail CEOs, store planners, visual merchandisers and others to compile its 6th annual Retail Design industry survey. The survey looks back on and analyzes 2014 and takes a look ahead to 2015 and beyond. The survey features lots of statistical graphs and charts and answers to various questions, including, “How many new stores has your company opened in 2014?” and “Over the next five years, do you think the average retail designer's job importance will rise, fall, or stay about the same?”
